Abstract Description : Did you know that by adolescence, the synapses that encourage young kids to try anything are reduced by nearly 50%? While that may sound discouraging, it’s actually an opportunity—the brain becomes more efficient, focusing energy on what truly matters to the individual. That makes adolescence the ideal time to explore interests and develop passions. But for students to stay curious, they need a wide range of opportunities!
Too often, online electives are treated as “nice to have” rather than essential. But what if electives are the key to engagement, retention, and whole-child development? Especially in grades 6–12, electives play a critical role in thriving online programs.
Join us as we spill the TEA ☕️ on how electives support self-management, curiosity, capability, and confidence. Grounded in adolescent brain science and real-world online learning experience, we’ll explore how electives build identity, foster community, and inspire lasting academic motivation.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, participants will be able to describe the role that electives play in the adolescent years, both from a practical and neurological perspective.
At the end of this session, participants will be able to list three ways in which turning attention to electives in their online space can support not only their students but also retention.
